Chrome Wire "Works Out" Well In Gyms

Share

No matter what type of small business you own, you'll need a storage area to store records, supplies or in this case - fitness equipment!

This personal trainer purchased one of our 72"w x 24"d x 78"h Chrome Wire Shelving Units to store his workout gear! He added wire shelving casters to the bottom of the shelving unit, giving him the ability to move the unit around as needed, keeping fitness equipment handy when training clients. Red Chrome Wire Shelving liners were also used to line the shelves, matching the decor of the gym and preventing smaller equipment from falling through the wire vents. You'll also notice he added Chrome Wire Hooks onto a Chrome Wire Hanging Rail for additional storage. That's what is great about Chrome Wire Shelving, it's fully customizable to meet your storage needs.

Thanks for sending us this photo, your Wire Shelving Unit looks like it's working out well (pun intended)! If you would like to be featured on our blog send us a photo of your storage unit and tell us how it benefits your home or business by filling out our contact us form!

The Perfect Pantry

Share

Check out this great kitchen pantry we helped a happy customer create using our bestselling Chrome Wire Shelving! Organizing your pantry is a perfect task for back to school, so you can keep track of kids' snacks and lunch supplies.

Due to the dimensions of the this pantry, we utilized several Chrome Wire Shelving components to create this custom food storage pantry.

We began by using the 96" Chrome Wire Post in the back, with the 54" Chrome Wire Post in the front. We tiered the shelves as well, with an 18" deep chrome wire shelf at the bottom with 14" and 8" chrome wire shelves at the top. The top shelves were anchored to the wall using the chrome wire wall brackets!

Thanks for sending in this photo of your finished pantry, it looks great! As you can see, we can create a custom pantry or any other custom storage unit for your space.

If you would like to be featured on our blog send us a photo of your new shelving unit in use in your home or business by filling out our contact us form.

An Interview With Our President

Share

To reflect on 50 years in the business, The President Of The Shelving Store, Joe Schodowski sat down for an interview with Sully's Blog. Mr. Schodowski discussed how he has evolved his business to stay on top of the competition and keep current with the modern times through his eCommerce store while never sacrificing customer service or quality! Read interview highlights below, or check out the full article here.

Sully's Blog: Can you give a little background on your business?
Joe Schodowski: Shelving, Inc was started in 1960 by my father Jack. Back then shelving products consisted mainly of slotted angle and nut & bolt shelving systems. Because Shelving,Inc was based in Detroit, MI a majority of the customer base was either an automotive manufacturer (GM, Ford, Chrysler) or one of the suppliers. In 1996 we registered shelving.com because we are “Shelving, Inc”. From 1996 – 2002 we utilized the domain shelving.com as a sales lead tool for our sales representatives. Late in 2002 we decided to try our hand in e-commerce and launched shelving.com. Next, we launched a business to consumer site www.TheShelvingStore.com in 2007 and have explored many more sales channels for that site.
Sully's Blog: How has has owning the domain Shelving.com impacted your business?

Joe Schodowski: It's been very positive. From 1960 – 2002 a majority of our business was conducted in our local geographic market (SE Michigan). Since 2002 our market has expanded to all points of the USA and some international business as well. It opened our boundaries for business and allowed us to weather the economic storm fairly well because we have developed a larger, more diverse customer base and in a larger geographic market.

Sully's Blog: Any advice for start ups, small business, or business of any size for that matter on choosing the right domain name?

Joe Schodowski: For start ups make sure you are well capitalized. Have cash and know what you are going to do with it. So many people I meet think e-commerce is simply building a website and sitting back letting the orders roll in. That is so far from the truth. You have to work constantly on driving qualified traffic to the site through many sales channels and monitor the results and spend to return on investment. You have to work on SEO, PPC management, CSE feeds, Affiliates, Social Media, Blogs etc… In addition you have to change your merchandising, update pricing and stay on top of ahead of your competition. You can’t ever sit back or you will soon be taken out by your competition.

Sully's Blog: Any other information you’d like to share?

Joe Schodowski: We love what we do. Selling shelving. By selling shelving the old fashioned way (face to face with a sales rep and customer), online or through our call center our passion is to “Make Space Work Harder” by supplying the right shelving products for the right storage project. We’re happy to help any customer no matter how small or large their storage project may be. We have been doing this for fifty years and have tens of thousands of satisfied customers. We look forward to continually serving our current customers storage needs and always willing and able to bring on new customers. We make it known throughout our company that our customer is the Boss. They are the only reason we exist and if we don’t take great care of them someone else will. We do everything in our power to make our customers happy and organized.

50 Years In The Business!

Share

This year The Shelving Store and our sister company Shelving Inc., are proud to celebrate our 50th Anniversary! Check out this great article featuring our "story" in The Oakland Press.

Family-run shelving business celebrates 50th anniversary.

By Barry Kalellis

For Journal Register Newspapers

Few family businesses survive for 50 years. In fact, according to “Family Business Review,” only about 30 percent make it to the second generation. In 1960, it probably never occurred to Jack Schodowski — a former math instructor at Wayne State University and later, a regional sales representative for a steel company — that Shelving, Inc., the company he started on the east side of Detroit, would pass the half-century mark. Or that his company would one day generate more than $6 million in annual sales, and go on to become one of the nation’s premier distributors and retailers of home, office and commercial shelving and storage products.

Schodowski began by selling shelving by day and building and installing custom industrial shelves for the automotive industry at night. Within three years, Shelving, Inc. had grown so much that the company opened its first warehouse on Grand River Avenue in Detroit. Soon, he hired an initial labor force that quickly outgrew the small office.

Jack added more workers and more inventory and then moved to a larger facility in Detroit on West Chicago Boulevard. Eventually, Shelving, Inc. outgrew that facility and moved to its current location in Auburn Hills in 1979 and expanded again in 1994 to add additional corporate office space. The 10,000 square-foot facility is located at 32 S. Squirrel Road.

In the industry, Shelving, Inc. was known as a storage system specialist and became a leader in providing heavy-duty shelving for commercial facilities. As it grew, the company expanded into pallet racking, lockers and storage cabinets, offering customers additional ways to organize storage space.

When they got old enough, Schodowski brought three of his sons (of seven children) into the family affair. Joe, Mike and John Schodowski learned the business from the ground up, assuming more responsibility as their father approached retirement.

When 2000 rolled around, Jack and his wife, Helen, decided to sell the regional business to his sons and son-in-law Jim Aiello. A plan to transfer the business from the first to the second generation was hammered out: Joe Schodowski assumed the role of president and handles overall financial responsibilities; John directs daily operations and manages inventory; Mike manages sales; and Jim is marketer-in-chief.

After the second-generation took over, they began modernizing the way the company did business. A critical step on this path was to open a new location — on the Internet at www.shelving.com. The next step was to open a new showroom and warehouse in Madison Heights called The Shelving Store to serve residential shelving and storage customers, a new target market. The company also opened a second website in 2007 to complement the new store, www.TheShelvingStore.com, for residential retail consumers.

“In our direct industrial business, we just don’t sell shelves,” said Joe Schodowski, “we sell custom-designed solutions for customers questioning how to best use their valuable storage space. We create space-efficient layout designs, recommend the right products and fabricate unique storage modifications.

“This represents about 40 percent of our revenue, and we have developed long-standing relationships with major organizations like Beaumont Hospital, the University of Michigan (and) Detroit Edison, as they build new facilities or expand old ones.”

The other 60 percent of the firm’s business comes from its two websites.

“In the beginning, we just used the Internet to generate sales leads,” Joe said. “Internet sales now account for more than half of our revenue.”

Adding online sales to increase the company’s marketing reach has doubled Shelving, Inc.’s business, which has been averaging an approximate 30 percent year-over-year increase.

Over the 50 years the company has been in business, it has served more than 30,000 customers. In the three short years that the online retail website has been operating, it alone has attracted an additional 12,000 consumers. It offers a wide-ranging selection of heavy-duty storage products that can’t be found in retail stores.

Weathering cyclical business recessions is a challenge for Joe Schodowski. It brings out his financial acumen and mettle. During last year’s downturn, he cut costs aggressively in advertising, marketing, payroll and with his suppliers. The effort led to the most profitable year in the firm’s history.

In the changing Michigan economy, Shelving, Inc. has diversified its customer base from primarily automotive accounts and is adapting to serve other industries, such as health care, biosciences, energy, education and federal and state government offices.

“The bottom line,” said Joe Schodowski, “is that everyone needs to store their things safely and securely. We help people organize their products in a way that they can maximize their storage space efficiently and also cost-effectively.”
