Go Green While Decorating

Share
In this day and age, going green is more important than ever, it's in the news and almost everywhere you look. So it only makes sense that when you go to decorate your home, going green is the best option. Here are a few benefits to decorating while being more Eco-friendly:
  • Well it's obvious that it will be better for the environment but it also saves you money
  • By reusing and donating items, you prevent items from being put in landfills
  • Using less chemicals will be better for your health
What to use

Use replenishable resources like bamboo for furniture, kitchen products and any wood items you use in your home. The reason why bamboo is considered Eco-friendly is because it grows back faster than most other woods like oak. Less common replenishable resources are rattan and jute, that can be used to make rugs, bags and even clothes.

Choose paint that has a low VOC, meaning the paint has lower levels of volatile organic chemicals than your regular paint. These chemicals are dangerous and will omit-gas from the products for as many as 20 years. VOC's can also be found in stains, wood flooring, plywood and even new carpet. And companies are even coming out with paints and stains that are VOC free.

Choose fabrics that are made from organic materials and have water-based dyes. These dyes are non-toxic and could help with skin irritations and the material is free from synthetic chemicals which is better for you and the environment. Stores now have sheets that are made from bamboo and hemp for that green and healthy lifestyle.

One of the best things you can do for the environment is to stop buying new stuff. Repurposing old items is a great way to save money and turn trash into treasure. So instead of buying a new dresser, take that old one you have collecting dust, sand it down, use some VOC free stain and bring it back life.
Making these few simple changes to your home can reduce your carbon footprint and help out the environment, so get on board and go green while decorating. Visit The Shelving Store to see our selection of Eco-friendly products.
