While vanities are handy for getting ready in the morning, sometimes they’re just not the most practical choice.

Maybe you don’t have the space, maybe you can’t store things there, or maybe you just don’t want one—but the fact of the matter is, if you don’t have a vanity in your house, it can be a little trickier to organize your makeup and keep everything right where you need it.

Luckily, this isn’t a hard problem to solve! With a little ingenuity and imagination, you can easily repurpose other home storage goods to serve as makeup organizers throughout your house. Here’s five of our favorites:

Document Sorter: A lot of makeup pallets sit in flat, thin plastic cases that are easily stored vertically on their sides. To make this easier, get some desk file organizers and use them to lay your pallets upright with the labels facing out for easier access.

Silverware/Drawer Organizers: For longer items like lipstick tubes and makeup brushes, you can take a silverware organizer or drawer organizer and hide them in a bathroom drawer to keep them easy to access and neatly put away.

Spice Racks: Most wall mounted spice racks are the right size and shape for things like lipstick, foundation bottles, and so on. If you can mount things directly to your bathroom wall, put a few spice racks up next to your bathroom mirror to keep them right at hand and ready to go when you need them.

Corner Wall Shelves: Similarly, using wall space is a good option for makeup storage. Depending on your bathroom layout, set up some small corner wall shelves as close to the mirror as possible to keep smaller items in reach. (Just make sure to hang them up high enough that little hands and pets can’t get to them!)

Mobile Carts: Finally, if you need an option that can keep up with you moving throughout the house, you might want to consider a mobile utility cart. Something small with a few tiers that can hold onto your needed makeup and travel through the house with you as needed.
